Sorry I thought I had update this. This turned out to be a cracked head in between the two valve seats in the #1. There were a while sequence of events that caused this. I revitalized this thread to help someone else with their misfire issue. My phone didn't give me the option to post the link

The coil packa are what they uses on the newest xjs. Supposed to be better but I think all the pre coil pack xjs ive had run meaner. There are three bols to rmove to coil oacks. You can then get qn extnsion ratchet and pull thw plugs
Hey guys, so my 97 XJ which I have had for awhile has recently been going through some pains. Recently did a tune up on her, including: the Distrib. cap, new NGK plugs because store didn't have enough champions, and new wires. Had to change out the solenoids for the transmission wasn't shifting into overdrive..ok check all running good. Decided since I some muck in the radiator (was on it when I bought it) I decided to buy a manual radiator and put an external cooler on it for the transmission..ok check all running good!
NOW...yesterday I get the wonderful p0301...misfire on cylinder one just like our OP. Immediately when I get it home from work, checked the resistance on all injectors and reading 13.0 Ohms. So then pulled spark plug on #1 cylinder and it wasn't fouled nor was #5 cylinder ( though they did have like a ash color to them no build up though??) but switch the two just in case annnnd still getting the p0301 code within 5 minutes of it idling. Now it did idle slightly rough I noticed before I got the CEL, stayed around 750 but was like a sputter every couple second with very minor vibration. Now and then I will smell what seems to be like its running rich at time but have never gotten any codes for 02 sensor or anything and the rich smell goes away almost immediately after smelling it. I do feel like from the sound of the jeep when outside of it, that it sounds like there might be a exhaust leak mid way around the bell housing. But have no confirmed.
I have read that Cam sensor has given folks problems? So maybe just get a new one of those? The 97 has coil packs correct not the rail like the 00+?
I know my next step I think is going to be a compression test just to either ease my mind or confirm the worst.
