Ok just looked up the parts in the parts manuals and the 80's models are different then the 91-96.. The 80's ones have more holes on them. So looks like ordering one from that site might be your best option to get the right part. The 88-90 models part numbers are 5300 3052 incase it's printed on the part for clarification.

I put the switch back in and tested the button and oddly the light works again. I guess the switch just had a bad connection. I'll RTV the cannister and see if that works. If not, I'll likely go the roue you suggested and buy an oem for $10.

Sure. I mean since my cruise control worked this morning! Thanks for all the help. The switch apparently just had a bad connection so it didn't cost a dime and the vacuum cannister just needed some of that RTV. It was a bit like body work spreading that stuff on the cannister.
Now that everything works, I just need to figure out a mounting location for the cannister. Both mounting tabs had broken and I had to gring the nubs off of one of them to get the RTV on securely. I think I'll head to Home Depot for some metal strap that I can use to affix the cannister to the unibody or something. Shouldn't be tough. With all of the cannisters I pulled form the J/Y, I have yards and yards of the vacuum hose. I could relocate the cannister to the rear 1/4 if I wanted.
Thanks for the help,
s

From reading the description on the bottle there basically it saying if your heater works, then you have vacuum at the cannister.
Vacuum Reservoir XJ 1985-2001
This is a factory original part. This is a vacuum supply reservoir. This is what helps open and close you heating vent & actuator doors among other things such as the vacuum supply for the cruise control. This is for all Jeep Cherokees from 1985-2001.
I see this was resolved now I should have read through the whole thread... One day I will fix my cruise control.

I agree with OKC since I have three different vacuum cannisters from the years you (and the wagoneer site) specified. I don't know how all of the vacuum systems worked in the various years, so I can't give you a great answer, but the proof is in the pudding and my assortment of cannisters seems to be just that.
With regard to the cruise control, it is almost a necessity here, unfortunately. In Northern Wyoming, if you drive 5 mph's over the speed limit on the freeways, you will get ticketed and the judge will uphold the violation. When I went to court for my 5 over, the judge said that he has upheld tickets for 4 over, so you have to be really aware of your speed on these boring and mindless highways and freeways in Wyoming (I-80 on the Souther border is a totally different story since it is the major beltway across the states and the truckers on it keep the average speed at 10 mph's or more).

OKC is that complete CC diagram you have, something you can post on the forum??? I have been TS the CC off and on since buying it 4 years ago and I haven't been able to figure it out. All the pieces are there and I've checked fuses and replaced the control switch on the steering column. I here clicking when I turn it on but no worky otherwise. The link holding the cable to the throttle body had been repeatedly Super Glued. What a Dumb *****!! So, I have a good link I got from the same donor XJ I got the Control Switch from. I just need further guidance.

my 1996 has cc and the light turns on and off, but it doesn't work. No problems with my heat either, but it could be some other vacuum, apparently?
Any suggestions I'd like to get mine working if possible.
On another note, my key ring light keeps flickering, any ideas on that? It's oddly temperamental.
