I have a 1999 Cherokee Sport 4.0 and was wondering if I needed to disconnect the battery to replace the crank shaft senor and ignition coil.

It's never a bad idea to disconnect the battery before you start working on the vehicle, especially the electric parts. Is there are particular reason you don't want to? It's such an easy step to add a bit of safety and besides, good time to clean your battery connections.
Could you replace both of those items without disconnecting the battery? Sure.... I have done both with no problems.
