Default Crank, No Start. Solved!

I just thought I would post in the hopes that it would help someone else out.
I have a 1989 Cherokee Laredo 4.0, I pulled through the drive through at Arby's one day at lunch and it quit on me.. husband had to come and pull me home. I assumed it was the fuel pump because I had problems with that in the past.. parked her for a few months because I have an 1977 MGB that was calling my name...The Jeep is my wintertime vehicle. Anyway, I started in on her last week.. I had fuel and no spark.. Cranks and Cranks... so thanks to this forum and the great and knowledgeable I may have figured it out. I replaced the CPS (Crank Position Sensor) still, no spark, I replaced the coil (borrowed from auto parts place), no spark, finally I replaced the ECM, ICM whatever you want to call it (ignition control module) and she cranked right up... but with a super fast idle... i tapped on the little modules on the throttle body and the idle stepped down... shut her off, jumped for joy because my Zombie Killer was back in service!! Tried to crank her again and got just a click.. fully charged battery, all grounds have been cleaned dunno . I pulled the starter off and am having it checked today.. I tested it at home with some jumper cables and a jumper wire and it engaged. I also crossed the hot and ground with it on the vehicle and it sounded like it was just spinning in there.. i'll keep you posted on the starter situation and any suggestions I will take! thanks

Talking

It's alive, it's alive... driving her today! I had to have a new starter solenoid put on my starter and all is good! I just wonder if all the cranking burned out the solenoid? I hope my trials help you out a little down the road...
and you bet your *** this girl can wrench!!

Great job!
Next step is buying mutitester and a service manual, so you can diagnose parts before replacing them.
Reading and using multitester is much easier than replacing parts.
Good luck, you are very smart!
I buy a lot of manuals from tradebit dot com Most of them only $7
I have 97 and 00

I did use a tester but I could not figure out how to test the coil... the cps was in really bad shape when i took it out and i could not find any clear directions on how to test the icm... I ended up spending about $100 bucks on cps, rebuilt starter solenoid, and junk yard icm and coil... still have the junkyard coil as a spare!
