Couple of questions...
ok ive got an 87 4.0 4x4 cherokee and my reverse still isnt working( all other gears are fine) unless i put it in 4low and stomp on it then it just barely moves, what could be causing this? Other question is when i give it a little gas it stalls out a few seconds and/or dies. anyone know what is could cause that(maybe bad fuel injectors)? Also steering is quite loose what can i do to fix that?

OK, Id it a manual or auto? if its an Auto and your reverse went out your going to have to get a new trans, if its a manual you may be able to rebuild it.
The crappy take off/dieing could either be a vacuum hose disconnected somewhere or cracked/dry rotted and broke, or its going to have something to do with the fuel system and if its that, it could be anything from water in your fuel to fuel injectors are old and clogged, distributor cracked or water in it.
If its auto, the 4low thing is probably tied in with your trans being shot also.

i understand about not wanting anyone else working on your stuff. i used to work on cars and i really don't trust any "mechanic" to work on anything me or my wife drive. that said i do know of a couple shops that i take my vehicles to for services that i don't care to do. point is, find a shop you can trust. i know its hard but its worth it.
as far as your trans problem, how many miles are on the tranny and what condition/level is the fluid? the AW-4 automatic is buillt by toyota and is extremely durable and hard to kill. you might get lucky by doing a drain and fill and reverse will come back.
as far as the off-idle stumble, have you checked the adjustment of the TPS? get a DVOM and spend some time checking the various sensors. the Renix Fuel Injection is pretty stupid as far as engine computers go, and it doesn't really know when things are wrong. it takes the owner getting to know his vehicle and being able "feel" when something is not right. it would be a good idea to go through the vacuum line system and make sure everything is good and secure. i had problems with mine for a while before i went through it fixed it properly. good luck and let us know if you have any other questions.
