Anyone know of a write up on a home brew cherokee alternator splash gaurd?
I heard changing auto trans fluid after never having it changed before is going to cause nothing but problems is this true? *i bought it used and the kid before me was a idiot so i know he didnt change it.* I have 200k on my jeep should i change it? *same goes for transfercase*
My rear axle is leaking a bit it appears. Its coming from the left side of the diff if you were looking at the truck from behind. Any if its the actuall diff cover leaking or something inside *pics tomorrow*
Thanks!

Changing the tranny fluid is ok. DON'T have it Flushed. If it been More than 75-100K. Do several partial changes, over a few weeks. Then do a final change including a filter. Test the solenoids while your there. Fill with Dex III fluid.
Chage the diff fluid also. Might just be the fill cap leaking, normal, or cover. Either way the leak will get fixed, unless its really leaking from the pinion.

never seen a fabbed alt. splash guard, but im currently selling a front skid plate/splash guard that covers the alternator. https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f11/xj...d-plate-49654/

you can see the alt. is tucked way up above the spash guard.
you can try looking in the junkyards to find one of these skid plates.

I thought that the skid plate in the front and rear were stock on all 4WD Cherokees. Is this true?
If you are unsure of the maintenance by the previous owner then I would do all the fluids. The ATF recommendations above sound good. Do the transfer case and the diffs as well.
When you change the diff fluid, clean the surfaces on the cover, housing, and the bolts, apply silicone sealer to the cover and hand tighten the bolts. Let the silicone cure for an hour before torquing the bolts. This will keep it from all squeezing out. I wait until the next day before filling the diffs so that the silicone is fully dry.
If you plan on keeping your Cherokee for a while, I recommend drilling and tapping for a 1/4"-27 pipe plug in the bottom section of the differentials so that you can drain the fluid without removing the covers in the future.
Good luck!

Thanks rweaver! What vehicles came with the front skid plates? How hard are they to come by? Should I be checking the local junkyards or fabbing up a decent copy and selling them on Ebay?
really? you guys never seen 'em? i find them in the junkyard quite often, along with the factory tow hooks. i'm not selling the one in the picture, i have another one i got from the junkyard.

Thanks for the offer on the skid although i have one. I had to take it off today to get to my alt and i was going to leave it off due to the fact that i had to cut half the bolts on the front side of it. Maybe ill throw some self threading 3/8's in there. I live in new jersey, nothing but swamps and deep water and sand here. I need some extra coverage. I was thinking of using the mounting bolts and putting a paint can around it with some aluminum brackets bent to allow venting for the alt but to block direct hits.
