Ahhhh....I see...fan clutch. Well I know for certain the electric fan, coolant fan, auxiliary fan, isn't working so that's a definite change. Hopefully this Saturday will be clear enough to get this done. It's been raining quite a bit lately.

Don't buy. Test.

It's an easy test. You just apply 12v directly to the fan's connector (after unplugging it). If it works, it's good. If it doesn't, it's not. THEN you buy one.

No drain, no fill, no problem.

Simple.

Buying parts to throw at it is an expensive way to troubleshoot.

Ha...I completely agree. I finally got the chance to test the fan and it is bad. Problem is the one I bought it the wrong one. Probably gonna have to find it online.

Out of curiosity, what are your ambient temps? This time of year we won't hear our efan for seveal months.

Just a quick question not trying to hijack but my 98 4.0L never gets to 210 it's like 2 notches away from that. Do you think I could have a bad thermostat or a bad etc?

My advice: keep a close watch over your shoulder....there are a bunch of people on here who would kill to have an XJ with indicated temps two notches below 210*.

Haha...yeah, I wish mine would stay below 210. Ambient temp on Maui this time of year is mid 80s during the day, sometimes upper 50s at night when the ocean breeze comes back in. So I took the bad fan out to find the part and now the temp is staying on 210...go figure. Still trying to find one online but no dice. Anybody gotta link to one?

Mathematically, 2 marks below 210 is 155.....either u have no t-stat, or it's stuck open, or the gauge is wacked. Need to correct this.

It's my understanding that XJs with "standard cooling" (rare) did not have a efan from the factory and didn't overheat. All cooling system components must be top notch condition to avoid overheating.

That's what I was thinking. It's more like 1&1/2 bars from 210. I just didn't know if the ECT sensor could be faulty. Are thermostats hard to replace on these?

If the motor is cold, the stat can be changed blindfolded. LOL

Thanks for the link. The problem with living 3,000 miles from land is either nobody will ship here or they charge an arm and leg to ship it. I'll probably pick one up here because fan + shipping is about the same as local prices. Saturday afternoon is gonna be busy. Thanks for all the help guys. My cooling system will now be fresh and new.

168.75F is not right either unless u r purposely using a 160F t-stat.

Most vehicles factory gauges r rigged to point +/- the middle when all is good and coolant temps r within design parameters. Jeep just happens to put the number 210 at the middle of the gauge so most folks presume 210 is "normal operating temp" and that's fine. With a gauge that has a "C" and "H" (most vehicles), no one has a clue as to what "normal operating temp" is....and that's fine too, as long as the needle remains +/- the middle of the gauge.
