friend was borrowing my 2001 XJ and it died while she was driving, said there was a loud ticking all the sudden and then it died. when i checked it out there was evidence of coolant spray out of the radiator cap and the resivour was empty. Now the jeep idals really rough and you can smell coolant, however it does not overheat or show signs of leaking coolant on the ground and there is no white smoke out of the tail pipe. when i checked with my code reader there were four codes, three for cylinder misfire and one for o2 sensor high voltage. and now the MIL light flashes when i drive. ,,,any idea what the problem is?

pull all the plugs and see if there is any coolant on them. Next I would do a compression check on all 6 cylinders. Sounds to me like its a head gasket

Probable cracked 0331 head on 2001 XJ.

They usually crack between #3 and #4 cylinders. Numerous threads on this forum.

anything to do with knock sensor ?

what does it do anyway?

i know my 30' work truck has low oil / other sensors to shut down engine .. to prevent full failure of motor

Knock sensor retards timing in case of engine ping.

XJs don't have any sensors to shut down engine. Driver is supposed to do that.

A work truck, well, some of the people driving those are not the sharpest knives in the drawer.
