Default Console Electrics

I've just picked up a 2002 Grand Cherokee last Friday. This morning, the Speedo, tacho and all warning lights failed along with the trip computer - so did the odometer. They came on for a few seconds part way through my drive to work but went off again straight away. The same thing happened on the way home. Everything else appears to work okay.

Does anybody have any idea what might cause this? Is it a loose connection or a relay problem?

I'm in the UK and the Jeep is a right hand drive. I don't want to spend a lot of money at a Jeep dealership only for it to be a minor problem.
