The oil filter adapter is another common leak spot for xjs. Mine would leak a 5 inch round spot everyday. The o rings harden and crack over time and it will leak. There are 3 you should replace. It is a pita to take the adapter off it you don't have the right tools.

I used an L shaped T60. I got a set of 6 sizes at autozone for 13$
-Had to jack the engine up to be able to unscrew it all the way.
-Getting it off is the hard part.
Autozone only has the one large o-ring. You need to get all 3 from a dealer or something.

If your gunna do your own repairs you need to get a basic set of tools and a good repair manual is my best peice of advice.XJs are pretty basic to work on.Now my XJ on the other hand is hard to find new parts for sometimes, gotta love Renix area XJs.

Oil Filter Adaptor Removal
OK, so I must be going blind. 98 4.0 and all I can "feel" is 3/8" allen in the center opposite the block. I can't see where there would be three o-rings. I can't figure out how to get it off the block - feel like an idiot!
Cleaned the 185,000 miles of crud off, removed the filter, looked at what I thought should have be bolts, but no, they were nothing. Can't imagine the thing has only one large allen to hold it on!!
Help please.................................
