coil spring rate question

how do you tell the spring rate of coils? I found a lifted xj at the JY and pulled the coils off but don't know how to tell if they are different from stock. it would help to know the spring rate, but i don't know how to tell what it is. is there a number somewhere? or do I have to calculate/measure stuff?

Being close to 100% clueless myself, I might look at the "junkyard finds" or whatever up in the sitickys. also maybe in wright-ups? (back in the main page)???
