You don't need to compress the spring. Just take the shock loose on the bottom. You may need to take the bolts out of the control arms as well. No compressor is needed.
i just put a 3.5 in procomp on my xj and i got the 2 in spacer in fine with out a compresser but i took my shocks out and my control arms but i decided to not fight it to put the other in and a half in so i went to auto zone and rented one...ADVICE to you man go ahead it get one it makes it so much easier!! i promise you that...... NW THATS JUST FROM MY EXPERINCE its not complicated to figure out

Some do forget that every XJ is different.
What works good for one, MAY not work for another.
When it comes to coil spring compressors for spring removal here is a good rule of thumb:
Many auto part stores have a tool loaner program. AutoZone for one. Put a deposit on the compressors, and when you bring them back, you get the deposit back.
Get the compressors BEFORE doing the removal.
When you go to remove the spring, IF jacking up your rig and dropping everything doesn't work...You have the compressors handy.
Ask for strut compressors. They will be a PAIR and clamp to the outside of the spring (usually one in front and one in back) Crank them down evenly and slowly.
Most times you do not need to fully compress them. But getting that little bit of length shortened up makes a world of difference.
