Default Code 22 Problem - Coolant Temp sensor...

CEL comes on. Code is 22. Clears on battery disconnect. Reappears after some random amount of driving. Sometimes 5 minutes. Sometimes 65 minutes. I changed the sensor. No change of behavior. I suspect it is a wiring or connector problem. Messed with the connector and cleaned and tightened the contacts. Seemed to work for a while, but came back.

Is this a known issue? Has anyone else dealt with this?

Early 96 Sport with 95 engine control electronics.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Do you have any symptoms or problems other than the CEL and code 22?

None whatsoever. That is why I suspect a momentary connector fault. Throws the CEL, but does not interrupt performance.

I did spend some more time dismantling the two wire connector, spraying it all with contact cleaner and pinching stuff tighter.

Cleared the codes and then took a short test drive down the road to the mailbox and back. No CEL.

Tomorrow we are going into YNP. About an hour each way. That will be a good test. I will report after.

Covered over 100 miles today (85-90 ambient). About three hours on the road in the mountains. No check engine light and no code 22.

So I will assume the problem was a faulty connector. I disconnected it and pried the back plug out of it where the wires to in. Then I used a probe to squish the wire terminal crimps as best I could around the wire ends. Its all down inside the back end of the connector, so I could not just squeeze them with pliers. I sprayed contact cleaner in there too. Tweeked the pins in the sender just a bit to bind more on the connector terminals. Put it all back together and got the desire results per the test drive today.

So, it you are having a Code 22, coolant temp circuit or sender, try this before spending money.

Hope this helps someone else.
