It's been 15 years since I've done an XJ, I forget the details. Just a normal clutch job except the TC. In a February downpour, away from home in mud is how I do it. This guy here took the "sissy" approach! (3 pages)

I hope you have better luck than I have. I still cant get my slave/release bearing to work. Been on it now for 3 days. As for advise, make sure you have a floor jack that will go up high enough and tall jack stands. I also recommend washing the underside unless you like dirt in your eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. Youll need to remove the center console, the shifter boot and the access cover (its held in with probably rusty sheet metal screws) to get to the 4 bolts that hold the shifter in. Youll most likely have to cut the 4 bolts that hold the downpipe to the flange on the cat converter. I also had to chisel out 2 bolts that holds the rear of the front drive shaft to the t case. Its a PITA....let me tell you. And I will most likely have to pull it again just to see whats up with my slave/release bearing, which is new BTW.

recently I changed the Master Cyl due to it was leaking. while bleeding the new one, (and I forgot to bench bleed it prior to install...D'oh) it took almost two jars of fluid and a lot of pump, hold, repeat, till it FINALLY got pedal. worked just fine for a few weeks of DD until after work one night, the reservoir was bone dry.? topped it off, and had to start it IN gear and speed shift to get home. next day, inspected for leaks, could not see anything obvious other than a small puddle on the ground, where did all the fluid go?...and it seemed to be a little complainy about going in to gear but with a few throws of the the pedal it seemed to be OK. a day or two of DD like this then it did not want to go into gear at all with or without pumping, and when in gear and running with clutch pushed all the way in it still moves! then I JUST went outside this AM...tried to put it into gear, nope...then I pumped the clutch twice, and it went right in. hows that for frustrating symptoms.?
