OK, guys and gals...
I have an '89 XJ, 4.0 4x4, 5-speed. For the last week or so, the clutch would have an intermittent "hard to push" weird feeling...
Yesterday I was trying to back out of a parking lot, and all of a sudden the clutch pedal went to the floor with NO resistance. It springs back with the help of the pedal return spring only. Fluid reservoir is still full of fluid. The shaft from the clutch pedal to the master cylinder is still attached to the pedal, it didn't fall off. Shaft was pretty wet, though.
I was stranded, had it towed to a local shop. I told them I thought the master cylinder had blown, and to quote replacement.
They called me today with a quote for $1100 to drop trans and do whole clutch job.
I suspect they are trying to hose me...I think it is the master cyl.
I am capable of doing a master cyl. replacement by myself, but doing a clutch job myself is problematic due to my living situation.
My idea is to replace the master cyl myself, (replace the cheap/easy parts first).
Am I analyzing this properly?
No pedal action, wet pedal to master cyl. shaft, fluid in the reservoir. Seems like bad master cyl. Wouldn't the reservoir be empty if it were a burst line, or blown slave cyl?
Ideas? Suggestions?
THANKS!

it sucks that these are internal slaves....ok try this disconnect the line from the clutch master hold your thumb over the hole the line was in (put rags on nearby paint and watch your eyes) have someone slowly push the clutch..you should get a lot of pressure (can't stop fliud from coming out) if you can stop the fluid or feel no pressure its the master
