Default Clunk when letting off gas, not slip yoke

And another question for all of you...

Like stated above I have a clunk when I let off the gas. Usually at lower speeds 25 to 35 mph. It happens most (but not all) of the time. Usually if I'm in traffic, and get on it hard, then have to let up real quick is when it "clunks". I know it's not the slip yoke. I've done my searching and mainly heard ujoints, or control arm bushings. Unfortunately I havent been able to crawl underneath the last couple days.

Just in case any info helps.... I do need to do my breaks. I also posted the other day about a whirling noise at about 45 to 55 mph. Currently don't have a front DS in. And no vibes, just a small shimmy around 60 mph (plus or minus 5 mph).

I am a bit paranoid about my xj, but I do know when something isn't right. Just looking for some things to check, as most of the threads I've read never have a solution to the issue.

My 98 did that until I replaced the rear leafs and all suspension bushings. symptoms included a shimmy under braking as well, and clunks at start and stop.

My '87 does that in stop and go traffic during freeway rush hour(s). I had a mechanic examine the drive line on a lift. The verdict was just general drive line slack all throughout. Each component having just a little slack apparently adds up.

My Jeep has 242,000 miles on it. I didn't replace anything. Still driving it. Not worried.

Unfortunately, I am nowhere near that mileage. I'm at 70k.

Should control arms have any play? Even the littlest bit? I did grab a hold of both lowers over the weekend and gave them a good shake/twist, and both have a little bit of play when I tried twisting them.

Also, when I pulled in to work just a few minutes ago, it gives a quick "clunk" when I get into my parking spot. This happened last year as well, but was few and far between. Didn't notice it over the winter.

I have something similar, especially when hitting my brakes and switching from reverse and drive and vise versa. I wouldn't say I have a clunk but I can hear something very mild when I let off the gas as well. I will be replacing my control arm bushings on Friday and can report back if that fixes my issue.

Please let me know. I'm curious to what happens.

Any chance you know if control arms should have even the slightest bit of play? Like I said before, If I grab them and try and twist them, there is a little bit of play, nothing crazy, but if they shouldn't have any, then I know where I might start.
