Default Cig lighter..

I searched a bit, but did not find my answer.
1989 XJ stock 4.0L/Auto

Anyways, was wondering if the cig lighter was on all the time or only when ign is on/acc? I just purchased a solar maintainer/charger, so I need to know whether I need to run the cable direct from battery and into the vehicle, or if I can just plug into the lighter.
Thanks in advance.

I have the charger.. I have it plugged in but didnt know. As far as charger goes.. it doesnt matter. if its an ign only on, then there in no power supplied.. should be a simple fix by a simple rewire. I have a car charger for my phone, I will try that and that will confirm the always on/ign only. I will post back when I find out tho!

Another quickie..
WHat would be the best way to route the cable.. is there an easy opening already in the pass side firewall.. Thanks.

I have a 94 and the ign has to be on also. There are a few wires under the dash that go straight to the battery from the fuse box (Left side under dash) just use an Ohm/volt meter and figure it out from there. Good Luck...Tj

Edit:On my fuse panel there is a slot that says "Batt" So I would say that would be the one your looking for. I tested it out and it is a direct link to the battery...Tj

On with ignition only.
There is no factory opening in passenger side firewall.
Batt on fuse panel is your best access to the battery without an additional hole in the firewall.
