Default Cherokeee and Auto transmissions

What year automatic transmissions interchange? Can i get any AW4 Cherokee transmission and it will work in my 98?

From reading here on the jeepforum.com
Automatic Transmissions
Torqueflight 904 - 3 speed automatic - used 84-86 with 2.8L V6 and 2.5L I4 engines
30RH - 3 speed automatic - used with 2.5L I4 engine 94?-00
AW4 - 4 speed automatic, electronically controlled - manufactured by Aisin - used from 87-01 (87-91 models include a Power/Comfort button that adjusts the shift points)

That power/comfort switch is interesting in my 91.

I'd bet with early pre96 models you'd have some issues.My buddy put an 89 trany and tcase in a 93 and had some issues he had to work out...So I'd suspect you'd be better off with a 96+ AW4..That's just my opinion is all...I am sure someone on here knows more about em then I though..

Yes but why are you wanting another tranny. Follow that set of year stats from JF. Do you have a problem with your AW4?

Early AW-4's had 21 spline outputs.... Later model ones had 23 spline output shafts...

Seems like I remember the split being 91 or 93....

That part is easily changed w/o having to open the tranny, or so I've been told. I bought a spare T/C and was worried that it would have the wrong spline count so I did the research and you can easily change the output shaft from my research.

Negative on the "no tear down" to change the output shaft in the tranny. The late model AW-4 has a speed sensor in the bellhousing on the drivers side at about 3'oclock if you are looking at the front of the tranny. Other changes include the wiring harness pigtail that controls the interal solenoids, and in the back of the tranny, you have to change the speed sensor on the tailshaft to match the one that your Jeep uses, if it is not the same style (2 "fingers" vs. 4 "fingers).

Hey Blue. I think that you are referring to the "input" shaft on the X-case, right? That is a changeable thing, but you would still have to tear the X-case down to change from the 21 spline to the 23 spline. Oh, and the TQ series has always been 23 spline. That is a holdover from using MoPAR stuff.

My tranny has a split converter and cracked from pump from the previous owner towing with it. And i was looking for a cheap alternative vs getting mine rebuilt completely or fixing just the converter and front pump.

Well you now have the info for which years will work in your XJ but I would buy the pump and torque converter and put that in if you have the funds just in case the JY tranny leaks or has been dry.

I have rebuilt so many transfer cases that I could prolly do it in my sleep. Just need the rebuild kit, snap ring pliers and hand tools plus a clean place to work. I have rebuilt about a dozen 231s and about three 242s.

www.bulkpart.com is usually who you can find stuff from for cheap. But i turned up nothing. I am trying to fix this problem the cheapest. I don't wanna dump alot of money in this. But i want to do it right also.

If you want used and good parts, try www.daveysjeeps.com

he specializes in only jeeps and has quite a bit of cherokee stuff there. I've gotten transmissions, axle shafts, knuckles, etc from him. He's in Ohio next to www.4wd.com
