Okay, so thinking outside the box again

I can get RV tire carriers pretty cheap around here, and they come with the universal mounting options for "square" style bumpers. Our cherokee's have a "square" style bumper. Do you think this would work as a carrier?

You can get different heights so i could mount it as high or as low as i would want. Just wanted some opinions

Not a bad idea, but the one I see in the picture looks like it would squeak alot. The RV is made to be mainly on the Highway, take it on a dirt road you will hear things you didn't even know were there.

Ours has a dampener in it, It is a poly bushing that gets squished and then it has a long hitch pin it to secure it upright. Doesnt budge =]

Thanks for your input, the more and more i keep thinking about it, The $20 for it keeps making more and more sense...

I really like the thinking out of the box, but I'm not sure it would work. I just don't think our thin little sheet metal bumpers could hold that much weight and jostling over time. Maybe if you ran some thicker plate through the bumper to tie into the bumper mounts. I really do like the idea though. I've been debating the hitch receiver tire mount myself since the funds aren't there for the swing out carrier. I realize they squeak like mad, but Where else does a 31-33" tire fit with a family and dogs?

I say go for it and let us know if it holds. How many mounting points?

I currently have my space on the roof, no issues there, but just wanted something different lol

And as long as you mount it not in the center but towards a side i think it would be ok.

It mounts using 2 Square"u"bolts. so it would wrap the whole bumper.

And i hear the limited funds thing... Dont start work till next week. Not even enough money for steel to build my own!(and i havent decided what type of bumper i want)

Thinking about it another way, what are the RV bumpers made of? The one in the photo doesn't look any more sturdy than ours. Can you glance at that when you pick yours up? I don't know where to get them, but I'd look into that if I could get them cheap like you can.

i like that idea i have my spare sitting in the back and 31s take up to much room when the fam is in it and the kids throwing there toys around. theres a rv at the jy right by me i saw today with that same tire mount but the thought never crossed my mind i might have to go over and take a look at it.

Our 5th wheel bumper is made out of 1/8" ribbed aluminum with 2 mounts, We have the hitch mounted on the back of it to carry accessories and a small boat or something if we chose too, but that is tied into the trailer frame via a 24" Class V receiver tube and then the bumper sits on that in the middle,

so i guess it is 3 mounts, but its also nearly 70" wide lol

depending on your backspacing, you'll probably need some sort of a spacer so your tire will fit on it.

i'd still question the strength of the u-bolts and/or the stamped steel mount.

i think someone makes one that reinforces the stock bumper from then inside and makes it plenty strong enough, i cant remember what its called but i think it looks great and its alot cheaper than a new bumper.....just my .02 cents

Alright, so i ditched spending (now $30) on the RV tire carrier, and instead went to the steel yard to look at scrap($0.30 a lb). Found a piece of 3x6 that was 80" long that i thought was 1/4". Weighed in at 115 for the entire piece. Found out after i paid my $37.xx and got it to the shop that it was actually 1ga(3/8"-not 3/16" a THICK 3/8" ).

so now comes the build of a front bumper(which will weigh a few pounds less than 115) =]

i am so excited on my find!

gonna mock up some paper templates to make unibody mounts out of 1/4" plate utilizing 7 bolts to each side

I am so excited! i already have the 1/4" plate from a recent bike build(at a custom motorcycle shop a family friend owns). Now its a matter of pulling out the plasma cutter and the grinder =]
