Default Cherokee Hub question

Is there a seal missing from this hub?

I ordered composite hubs for my Cherokee, and looking at the mounting surface side, compare the 2 photo's. One has a seal and the other (mine) doesn't. Is it missing something, or is that a design difference between composite and cast rotor hubs???

They're two different designs. But according to Rock Auto the composite one is for an 89-99 Cherokee and the cast one is for 99-01 Cherokee. Maybe a change over during '99?

I put Timken hubs on my '99 and it was the bottom design. I thought the cast rotor was only 2000-01.

The old style Vs what I got from RockAuto. I ordered the composite based off info I got here (lug length of factory unit) and cross referenced that with the parts store.

I want ant to get this thing back together and hit the trails, but I do not want to be missing an important seal.

as long as the new one is the same height as your old one, you have the correct one. they did change mid way through 99 and are different in size (height) if you put them beside each other as you did.

as for the seal, i wouldn't worry about it, timken has a good warranty anyways, so if it does fail, it would be in the first year and i believe timken has 3 year free replacement warranty.

maybe fill that groove with some thick grease when you install it.

Well, after going back on rockauto web site, I'm more confused now... lol.

Looking at the pics of the cast version, it looks more like what I had stock. Maybe I'll order the cast version and see before I go any further.

Cast or composite in the description is referring to your brake rotors not the hub itself. If you have the late-model one piece cast rotors, you use the unit bearing that is described as "cast". If your brake rotors are the old style composite ones, you use the unit bearing labelled "composite". The center section of the composite rotor is much thinner steel sheet metal than the cast iron, thus the dimensional differences in the hub/bearing. Mount the wrong one and the calipers won't align with the rotors.
