Hey all,
I've been having problems with the clutch on my 1998 XJ 5 speed for a little while now, and finally getting it into gear and shifting is becoming impossible.
After inspection of the reservoir on my master cylinder, I noticed that it's empty. I was considering filling it up, and bleeding it out at the slave and master, but i was baffled to find that the FSM had zero info on bleeding the clutch, and ended it by simply saying that the whole system has to be replaced as a unit.
To Napa I go to order the new system, and I find that the master and slave cylinders are available separately - Why bother, if the system is replaced as a unit?
Are there bleeder valves on the cylinders and I just can't find them?

yea it stupid there is no bleeder but if you know the tricks you can do it without.
1st, did you replace the slave?
what was wrong with you clutch and how did you fix it?

The best method ive had luck with is:
1)remove the slave, let all the fluid drain out, you dont want old fluid in your system.
2) fill the reservoir with fluid and pump the master once or twice till theres fluid coming out the line at the bottom. Have a buddy stand watch at the top to make sure the reservoir doesnt go empty
3) reinstall the slave to the line with the roll pin. dont bolt to the trans
4) point the slave straight down to the ground, pump it in and out by hand till theres no more air bubbles coming out of the reservoir. This may take a quite a few. (I also tried to fill the slave with as much fluid as i could before doing this, idk if it makes a difference but i'm sure it cuts down on the number of times you have to pump the slave by hand).

Older XJ's have an internal slave and a bleeder. 93+, or somewhere around there, Chrysler started installing sealed unit with an external slave that cant be bleed by a bleeder valve
