hey every body,,thnx alot for all the help,,,this is like the most useful forum ever,,great.,,
nyways just wanted to ask a couple of questions.,,
cheked my codes today.,,turned key on n off 3 times,,checked all systems everythin was fine,,no codes all was good but after tht the check engine light came on n its been on all day cnt figure it out,,checked codes again also nthin n light still on,,it wasent on before checkin codes first time,,,ny ideas?????

I didn't think you could check codes that way on '99 and newer? What did it do/show when you did the procedure?

i turned the key on off on off on,,,
turn on for 3 times n keep pressin the trip button tht resets the trip the last step n let go as u switch on.,,so it like thiss
on off on off press button on leave button as soon as u turn on
it will check all systems,,odometer will thn write 1111111 thn 2222222 n so on till 9999999 thn all the needles will go crazy ,,,it cheks all systems.,,
ny way i did tht thn it didnt give me ny code but the check engine light came on after ..,,ny thoughts on tht???no codes stored

You're not supposed to press the button. If the self-test works on a '99 vehicle with digital odometer, it'll change the numbers by itself.
It doesn't work on my wife's '04. When I tried, the odo went from miles, to blank, then said "done", and never showed any codes. That needs a DRB scan tool.

is the button pointless to press is that what your saying? will it say anything if there is a code problem?

i was just explainin the procedure cause sm1 asked me how i did it,,
nyways the test worked n thr werent ny codes stored but check engine light on after check n wont go off n if i test again no codes,,,

I know this works on '98 and older. Don't know about '99. You don't need to touch anything but the key. On a digital odo watch the numbers. With regular gauges, the check eng./ serv. eng. light will flash in a sequence of long then short flashes. Example: 5 long flashes,short pause, 5 short flashes long pause, = 55 End of Message, and so on.
