Check Engine Light comes on and off?

Hi, I have a 96' cherokee with a 4.0L. Recently the motor has been running rough, the check engine light comes on and off periodically. When idling the exhaust smells of unburned fuel. I took it to my local garage and the mechanic used a diagnostic tool and it told him the motor was running lean and running rich at the same time? He didn't know what to do. Any suggestions for places to start looking?? Thanks!

X2 on the codes. They are listed here on CF in a sticky so if you buy a cheap scan tool you can find the meaning of the codes here. But O2 sensor sounds the most likely.
