we had some bad tidal flooding around here before and i drove through about a foot of salt water, real slow to make sure it didnt splash the engine, and got home and rinsed down the brakes so they didnt rust or what not. drove the jeep out to dinner fine about 30 minutes after driving through the water with no light on. then as a start it up to drive home i have a rough idle and then my engine light goes on. It doesn idle rough anymore and drives just fine but the light is still on.
any ideas??
thanks in advance

it sounds like a little moisture still got on the coil pack boots causing a misfire. if it is running fine now then it probably was a one time thing. The light will stay on untill the computer sees that it is fixed. it will take 50 or so startup and shut down cycles to clear the computer or you can have it cleared at your local parts store, or you can pull the positive cable off and touch the neg. cable together to clear the computer power. you should have the codes read before clearing them though just so you know if it does come back on then you can see if it is the same code or not. hope this helps

The strategy for a check engine light should always be the same. Have the codes read. Use the OBD technology provided to you by your Jeep.
You will need either a code reader or a scan tool. Also, some parts stores like Autozone will read your codes for free.
Write down the EXACT code, not just a description. Post that exact code number here for comment.

+1
Get the codes read, make note of the codes.
Have the codes reset to turn the light off, and drive for a while.
May have been a moisture problem that set off a misfire code and once it dried out the fault condition is gone, but the light will remain.
Without a failure code, nobody can really offer any good help.
