So my 'check engine' light came on today. It went off the next time I started the car but was on for an entire trip.

I did the computer code check and got 33, which from what I can see is 'wiring to A/C clutch fault'. I am driving a 1993 Jeep Cherokee Limited.

Can anyone tell me how serious this is? I am a total mechanical novice, so this is no doubt a dumb question but is this about my A/C or is it about something to do with the clutch that the A/C plays a role in?

Both either that you have a broken wire to engaged the clutch or clutch is feed a signal back to the ecu saying I'm engaged when its not or when it is.
