Can anyone recommend the cheapest OBD scanner that would allow me to erase/reset the check engine light? Amazon lists them from about$15 upwards to $100+ and I have no idea what's good.
My check engine light goes on every couple of months, usually but not always on a very hot day. Generally the code refers to an O2 item and sometimes cat converter now and then. The 02 sensors are all new. I have a mechanic friend reset/erase the code and all is quiet for the next svl thou miles or svl months until it lights again.
He says my high-mileage y2000 sport just isn't happy with ethanol-added gasoline.... so if I had a cheap scanner that would allow me to erase the setting I'd be happier and not impose on a nice guy.

$22 and its good enough that I have several of them now, give them as stocking stuffers during the holidays, and permanently wired one into my Jeep. I have had no problem scanning old Jeeps, new Jeeps, Toyotas, Chevy, Honda (old and new), and Subarus.

About 3 years ago I bought this one:

I don't think they even make it anymore even though it appears to be available on this site I never heard of. Bought mine from Newegg for $35. It does freeze frame and read live data. One of the reasons I bought this one was I found a Youtube video and the guy was demonstrating it on an '00 XJ. What I own. Figured good enough for me. Funny thing is I know these guys at a garage and they have a Mac one that looks exactly like mine. Said they paid $100 for it. It might not be the same one but I betting it is a rebranded Launch.

don’t take any advice from your mechanic friend... you have an issue and it has nothing to do with ethanol gas . The code reader I keep in my cars is an Autel cost about 30 on Amazon . Let me know what your code or codes are once you get one and we will give you solid aside from there .
Can I take you up on your kind offer to provide advice ref OBD code. I just ran it this afternoon after finally getting my own reader. The code came up as PO432 "main catalyst below threshhold. bank 2" Is that serious -- or seriously expensive? In the meantime I erased it and will see what happens. My Cherokee won't get heavyduty use until summer when I head to my remote cabin with a couple of miles in 4L. Thanks and rgds, Kap

I tried a no-name with the Torque app. I could never get it to log any data, and getting any help on their forums just isn't going to happen.
I replaced it with the OBDLink and I'm very happy with it. The software blows away Torque, and it also comes with software for your PC, so it does even more.
By the way, I'll second Greasmonkey's suggestion. Your 'mechanic' friend should stick to doing oil changes and lube jobs.
