I'm not saying a V8 would be bad. What I am saying is that for the V8 to be more than a conversation piece, it better have more power than an 18% power gain. Take into consideration the extra money you'd need to spend as well.

You wanna factor in the weight of a cage, tires, wheels, cases, parts/tools, but you don't take into consideration the extra weight the motor brings, and the lack of HP gain.

To really make it worth it, you'd have to spend plenty of cash. And at that point the means are starting to outweigh the end.
ok killer ever owned anything with a v8? i have.
dont knock a v8 till you try it. im not sayin trash your 4.0L and v8 swap the $hit but if you want to its an option. my entire jeep is a convo piece because i actually wheel my junk. i know all about the power to weight ratio the newer corvettes have the best power to weight ratio in the american market.
this v8 thing is something that doesnt need to be brought up anymore.

to the op similar to the guy above CHEAP And HORSEPOWER dont belong in the same sentence.

And corvettes arn't that great,Well they go fast as he$$ but the quality is right down the tubes, cheap plastic interior(it saves weight) junky and filmsy exterior,(again it saves weight)Besides the americian beast of a motor and good tranny the tourqe tube design is BMW, the suspention is AUDI just like a camero's suspention is Audi also.So you might have say the corvettes engine and tranny are great Oh well.Ok back to the some what out of order post lol a v-8 can be made to over come the power to weight issue, but heres the catcher for the original post it isn't cheap HP,HP is never cheap cause it doesn't exsit in the real world.

These things aren't meant to have gobs of power. Its a 4.0 n/a I6. Why do you think everyone suggests gears? Not just for the added strength.

As for a turbo, I'd be careful unless you've got experience with turbos. It requires a hell of a lot more than a bolt-on turbo and some pipes. You need fuel upgrades, oil/coolant lines (both if you wanna be reliable), plenty of plumbing, some form of intercooler, not to mention plenty of other upgrades to the running gear.

Your best bet is a motor/trans swap. If you add serious power to the 4.0 its gonna cost money. Not just into the motor, the trans and prolly tcase as well.

In the end of the day, no matter what, its not gonna be cheap.

well we've gone WAAAAYYY off topic since he only wants suggestions for 4.0L stock Jeep engine upgrades, not rebuilds or engine swaps.

And to that '*****' comment, I meant for a 4x4 off road ready rig, these Jeeps have plenty. considering the Toys and others that have smaller engines. A jeep is fun if you have the money to toss massive ***** in it like supercharged this and turboed and bored that...but this is a jeep. This kid isnt spending thousands and you know it. He's wanting to get cheap HP and tear up his rig without serious upgrades.

just entertain him with the request he made!
and yes, 200hp is ***** compared to SUVs today, run it off the line and you'd be DAMN surprised what a tuned 4.0L can do through the first few gears...then HP comes into play and 200 starts to seem weak. They'll pull a lot for how light they are with only a 4.0L too..

Default Want the cheapest way to increase horsepower...

Don't.

Decrease weight.

My 95 Sport weighs 2955 lbs and when new generated 190 hp...for a 15.55 lb/hp ratio.

Now say I was able to shave off 200 lbs...pull the AC, take out the rear seat, the spare, etc. etc. Then the vehicle would weigh 2755 without changing the HP. That makes a 14.5 lb/hp ratio. Or the equivalent of upping the stock weight vehicle to 203hp...

Of course there's a limit to how much you can pull...but you can probably figure out at least 200lbs if it's just a fun vehicle...

Size: 3.6 KBYou are going to have to do a stroker motor to get somewhere close to that power number,There is no way possiable to grind that kinda numbers out of a stock or semi stock with all the little power adders together to reach that number. You just cant do it on the CHEAP NEVER. NOT OUT OF A 4.0 LITER,IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN OK??????????????????????SORRY TO BE THE 100TH PERSON TO TELL YOU.

Really than all you can try, it will improve some but I dont now how much and you cant beleive what the package says .Try CAI a real one, free flow exhaust, upgraded fuel injectors, slightly larger throttle body like a 62mm anything bigger (well its like to much carb as a example) and you want the lower neck tapperd so it doesn't whistle.Synthetic oils all of them.( keep your tires at proper air all the simple things we all overlook.)Even an eletric fan if you want to spend that much money cause a fan that isn't all niger rigged up will cost a good penny try FF DYNAMICS .com for a fan,yes they are expensive but there the right ones. You may already have some of this installed I dont know but good luck and keep me posted.Good Luck. Plus a good highend set of wires cap and rotor and plugs I just bought a highend set of wires cap and rotor from summit for 44. bucks for my ( dakota ) I got the c.o.p ignition on my jeep I love it its so simple a kid could figure out any trouble with it, plus it puts out more power than a hi proformence coil another thing you could try,I also got the accel coil for the p/u there on sale right now all this stuff.Name: worky.gif
