Default charging system - how many V?

How many volts should a 99 Cherokee (4.0 v6, 2WD) alternator produce? Is 13.8 enough?

depends on the state of charge on the battery, if the alternator is not actively charging the battery you may only see 12 volts, as high as 14.4. If over 14.4 you'd better be getting a new alternator or putting in a new regulator because it will toast your battery in no time flat.

The ScanGauge in our '98 XJ indicates a voltage range of 13.9 to 14.2.
