Changing a Rod Bearing tommorrow !HELP!
Ok so I looked around and found that you could do this through the bottom of the motor by taking the oil pan off. Correct?
And you can take the oil pan off by raising it as high as you can and letting the axle droop you dont actually have to take the dampener and shocks off right?
Sorry just want to make sure averything will go smoothly as possible cuz this is my daily driver. Are there any more snags i might run into? Oh yeah and how do i know what size bearings to get? its a 93 cherokee sport 4.0 4wd auto.

You've got it right so far. While your doing this you might as well clean all the s*%! out of the bottom of the oil pan, and replace the rear main seal, you'll have to replace the oil pan gasket as well. I think there is a good write-up on the rear main seal on go-jeeps.com.
As for the rod bearings, I did mine a little while ago and it worked like a charm. You should, and these guy will all tell you the same thing, mic the journal, and go from there. I didn't have a mic gauge at the time I did my, and mine is my DD also. When you take the old bearings out, make sure you know which is the bottom and which is the top, on the back of the bearing it is stamped, either, STD=standard size, .010= 10 thousandth under (the crank that is) and so on and so on. I would see what size you have in there, and see what condition they are in, like are they wiped clean of the in-lay, scored, or just gone. And go from there.
DON'T FORGET TO TORQUE EVERYTHING TO THE RIGHT TORQUE, AND DOUBLE CHECK, THEN TRIPLE CHECK EACH ONE........
Good luck my friend,
J

if you dont mic your journals your wasting your time. you need to turn the crank over and check 360* around the journal for gouges....if you can catch your finger nail on any scratches you see in the journals...your crank needs to be tunred.

This is a mic or micrometer. They come in various size openings. This is a 0-1" one but they come in 1-2 and 2-3 etc...
They are used to measure the rod and main journals to see how much wear there is so you know if you need larger than stock sized bearings.

My father was a machinist in his youth and mine are from him and 50 years old. But I have seen them in a wooden box at Harbor Freight. I would make sure they are accurate by using some feeler guages to see that they are properly calibrated.

Did the rod bearings no problem....They are much better now. When I removed the old one's almost all the inlay of the bearing was gone. And it seems like someone use standard size lowers, and .001 uppers in my XJ, not sure why? I would think that this would make the diameter not perfectly round like it should be. But, yes, all if fine and it's been running great since. Oil pressure up around 60psi under load, and 40psi at idle.
Thanks,
J
