Default CEL says low temp but gauge says just below 210?

After a drive today I went to check if I had any CEL's since I had a start-up issue yesterday. Got code 17 which, from what I know, is the code for "engine running at too low of a temp for too long".

Thing is; the gauge sits just below the 210 mark.

Also, been a bit dissapointed with the modest heat in the cab lately.

Most likely the thermostat? Or would a clogged heater core affect the engine temp?

Both plugged heater core and/or no t-stat, stuck open stat or too low temp stat can cause poor heater performance.

Ok, but would a – on it's own – heater core cause the CEL to throw an engine code?

I wouldn't think so.

If memory serves correct, it's not for the temperature itself, rather the voltage of the sensor. Like others have said, try swapping the thermostat & or sensor.

Ok, just wanted to make sure – hoping that I won't have to flush it right away.

You mean the code?

I'll start with the t-stat – here comes the next Q; which t-stat? I'll do what Purple wrote and use the 195F, but normal t-stat or Superstat?

If u r going to replace the stat, might as well remove the heater hose from the water pump and flush the heater core with a garden hose.

A little update.

Got around to changing the t-stat today, got a 195F Superstat. Did a semi-flush; ie flushed the radiator a couple of times – will do the whole system when I (finally) get around to trashing the heater core valve (long overdue) and find a tool that will fit for the bottom drain plug on the block.

The old t-stat was way worn and crusty. With the new one in I'm getting good heat and the CEL is gone and the engine heats up faster.

Thanks all for the help and input.
