Default Thunk after Acceleration?

At speeds above 45 mph when I hit the gas and then let go it jerks. Kinda like a thunk i guess. It only happens at higher speeds and right after i let off the gas.

Any ideas on what the issue could be? Transmission mount is what came to mind first. How does one go about checking that?

Thanks

Year/Engine?

If yours is a 97+, check out this link. Greasing the slip joint. Very common root cause of a "clunk" on acceleration....

Sorry about that.

It's a 4.0, 1995, automatic

Is that only an issue on a 97+?

The thread seems to point that it is but I'm just making sure.

Many possibilities, Ujoints, worn tranny mount. These are all guesses, its gonna take some inspecting on your part to pinpoint the cause, That said, for the ujoints, crawl under vehicle, grab drive shaft, and check for play, look for up/down movement, as play rotating play can hard to tell apart from play in ring and pinion. For the tranny mount use a large screwdriver/pry bar between the trans and mount, checking for excessive play.

Okay, I finally got the chance to get under the jeep and check out the issues.

First of all, there is a good bit of play in the driveshaft up and down, but it seems to be an internal issue associated with the transmission. The part (not sure what its called) that come out of the transmission has a bit of play in it.

Also, I put the jeep up on a ramp to crawl under and the seems to be some fluid leaking out of the transmission where the driveshaft comes out. Is this a related issue? Its a small leak from what I can tell.

Finally, the transmission mount seems okay but I think I may go ahead and replace it soon for peace of mind. I replaced a motor mount not too long ago and I should probably hit the transmission mount soon aswell.

Any other input on my first question?

Should I be concerned with the leak?

If theres play in the drive shaft most likely your U joints need to be replaced and you shouldnt have fluid leaking is it 2wd or 4wd

2wd

It seems to be coming right with the driveshaft meets the transmission.
