Default Cats our not

I have a 2000 xj and want to know if it will run ok if I take the cats off and if so will it run better or not? I have a cat back system on it and going to be portion a set of headers on it next week.do should they stay or go? Or will a free cat be a better option ? Check eng lights don't bother me st all.
