Hokay, I think I have a pretty good idea on what the problem is, but I need confirmation.
Basically, I was about 25 miles away from my house today when my car just stalled at a particularly crappy part of town. The car just felt like no gas was being supplied and it was driving really badly...stuttering, chugging, stalling numerous times. Soon after this started happening, I smelled a heavy odor of gas and not to mention when the car was running it was pinging like hell.
It was hell to get back home, but I have to give the car credit for making it back home....it barely made it onto my driveway before it died for good but it was definitely not happy with its life on the way back.
I am thinking it could be a fuel pump related issue, or perhaps a clogged fuel filter. The reason why I say this is because for one the car would crank and turn but it would not start. And when it did start it would run for maybe 30 seconds before it died again. I had a Camaro that did the same thing back in the day and it ended up being a bad fuel pump.
I am confident I can do this myself because I have fixed pretty much everything myself in this car but I am wondering how difficult of a job will it be for this one? It's a 96' btw.
Thanks guys

Install a fuel pressure gauge. (can be rented). Your 96 needs approximately 49 psi to start.
It might be the pump, but it could also be a bunch of other things. Don't guess.

The recent episode we had with the '97 with similar but a bit worse symptoms ended up being the coil and coil wire together. I started guessing at first, but was wrong each time. I was originally thinking everything from the MAP sensor to the fuel pressure regulator to the CAT being obstructed.
Like the good advice you got, don't guess. Check things out and look for codes. On occasion, you can have a code in the ECM but no CHECK ENGINE light.
