Can't find a new gas tank anywhere !!
In search of the never ending emissions problem it lead me to the top of the tank. There was a crack under the nipple of roll-over valve. It looks like it twists 90 degree and then comes off. But it does not. I destroyed that roll over valve. Does anyone know if those roll over valves can be removed ? And if so how? I figured I'd just get a new tank. But guess what ? Cannot find a tank ANYWHERE!!! WTH!! anyone know why ?? Any suggestions would help.

for a 2001 ? It does look like it should come off but I couldnt even get a thin scrapper under the collar, In fact I started damaging the tank trying to get a flat screwdriver under there. I am guessing at this point I cannot do too much more damage. Also, looking online I see diagrams of the tank and exploded view diagram and it is never shows it as a part to the tank. Is it one-with-the-tank? lol does anyone have specific experience with this year Jeep. I noticed the tanks changed towards the end of the late model jeeps.

Ok I cannot speak for everyones Jeep but here is some useful info.
1) The roller valve does not come off the tank. It is fused right into the ABS plastic. I had to remove it one little piece at a time and eventually drilled most of it out. The only thing left is the collar that sits on the ABS plastic and even that will not budge. I will have to grind it off.
2) You cannot find a 2001 XJ tank ANYWHERE. Not rock auto, not the dealer etc. I spent a good day looking. Yes there are used ones and extended range tanks but no new ones.
3) I am going to fix it with some steel putty another Rollover valve that I will mount in the same hole.

I love a challenge!

You won't like the price. I think a junkyard is your best bet. It's a poly tank so should be ok on an old Jeep.

I think it's the wrong tank anyhow. The 96 has the hole in the front of the tank slightly off center.
Here are a few from $108 to $89 on Amazon. I think the Dorman is the heavier gauge tank. But Dorman also makes a replacement ball valve if followed through to their site from Amazon.

I'd be tempted to try an older model Cherokee unit to see if it would sit in there ok. Not a big deal to buy a new fuel pump and sending unit if it's compatible with the newer Cherokee.
Wow you DID find one and holy cow !! And forget the junkyard tank, mine is good except for the hole I drilled out on top but I will repair it before I pay that much for a tank.. Good find ! Wish it were cheaper.
Yup, and older model would probably work. So far I have replaced fuel injectors, coil, spark plugs, cylinder head I am trying not to break the bank. SOOOOOOO here is what I did, in case anyone is having this problem too.
I dropped the tank (10 min) emptied it and drilled out the roll-over valve with 1.5 in hole saw. Bought the Dorman rollover valve and took off the retainer spring and o-ring. I bought some quik Steel tank repair epoxy and broke off about 1/2. I rolled it in my hands into a long section, like making a pretzel. When it was hot to the touch I put it on the gas tank around the hole I drilled out. I took the rollover valve and pushed into the hole on top of the quik steel putty. I came back an hour later and the putty was hard as hell. I think this is going to work. If it doesn't I will start thinking about an older model tank, but then that means I will need a different pump etc.

Good work-Your repair will probably last a life time. The old style steel tanks only advantage was the fuel pump access on the side so you technically didn't have to drop the tank. Each time I did a fuel pump though, I dropped the tank. It made it easier in my opinion.
