Can you tell which rear diff just by looking at it?
So I've been underneath my XJ today and have come to the conclusion that the front end is OK. Comes out of 4WD or PT into 2WD with a mild clonk but it is doing it.
So I'm looking at the rear diff now.
Heres a vid of me trying to turn the wheel with everything in Neutral

It's been suggested that my rear diff might be an LSD and the clutch packs are shot (whatever they are!) Its a UK 1999 4.0
Is it possible to work out what diff I have just by looking at the plate?
Engine sticker
Transfer case

I bought a 2001 Sport about a month ago, and wanted to know all the features/options it had on it.
I e-mailed Chrysler at customerassist@chrysler.com. Sent them my VIN, and in about 24 hours got a very courteous response. They sent me a complete build sheet which lists things such as axles, ratios, tranny type, etc. Amazingly, they even told me that a recall had never been completed and to take it to the nearest dealership to get it done.
Keep in mind, I just bought an 11 year old vehicle, and this recall was from years ago!!
My local dealership was happy to do it and completed it the next week.
Give it a try.

i second this, the rear axle you have is a dana 35 as stated above, any local dodge chrysler jeep dealership can give you a build sheet if you give them your VIN, and the cherokees have an open recal for the catalytic converter and ecu. all the info above is good info, goodluck! also if it is a limited slip make sure you have limited slip rear end oil in there otherwise it will ruin it.

what does that little tage say?????? You have a Dana 35. The tag will tell the gearing and if it is lsd. Should be a sticker in the glovebox, instructing to use friction modifier if you have LSD, also. but sticker could be missing.
