I blew another U-joint today. The last time I did, I bought a replacement and a spare. I started looking at the spare today and noticed that it is beefier than the stock one.

So ... I am wondering what it's from, if I can use it, and if it uses the same Spicer U-joint.

Both have 27 Splines.

Here's the pics:

Just measured the end caps on the u-joints. The thicker shaft actually uses smaller u joints. I'm guessing the 260X Spicers where the stock one uses the 760Xs.

Guess this means it is a Non ABS axle shaft? Any problems running that in a truck with ABS?

your "spare" shaft is a non abs shaft with the smaller 260 joint likely from an early to mid 90's cherokee.
your stock shaft has the larger 297 joint that is from mid 90's to 01 cherokee.

the spare shaft is of no use to you. you need either an early to mid 90's abs shaft, or later 90's non abs or abs shaft from either a tj or xj.
non abs shaft can accept your abs stub shaft with the tone ring. but it needs to be the larger 297 joint so your stub will mate up.

i'd say toss the "spare" shaft, or give it to someone as a trail spare. but even the early non abs guys don't really want that shaft, as they can actually use the later non abs shafts as a replacement.

if you use that shaft, you won't have abs, and it will act up till you reach 25mph.

Well that sucks. I have another spare as well that is the same as the one I just broke. Bad news is, I already ordered a u-joint for it and the bigger "spare."

If anyone is in the market for a non-abs passenger side axle let me know! Will have a brand new Spicer u-joint installed.

According to a dude I talked to today, both pictured axles are non-abs. He says the rusty one is not out of an XJ and will not work.

Same thing my friend that builds XJs for a living said. Said he doesn't know wtf it is. Possibly Grand Cherokee.
