Default Can my Jeep tow my Mustang???

I am moving to Cali for the next year... and I am stuck on if to take my XJ with me or to take my 2001 mustang GT?? So i have thought about renting a car trailer from UHaul and towing the mustang behind the jeep. It is not a short tow due to me curently being in Ohio, 35 hours by Google Maps. So I am wondering what everyone thinks.... I think if one must go, it should be the Mustang, she is beautiful and the 440hp built no2 motor is fun and well and I always just wanted to drive down the coast. But the KJ can fit all the stuff I need to take easily as where the mustang will be jam packed...

if it is indeed a KJ, then no.
but if it is an XJ, then it could possibly do it safely as long as the tow weight does not exceed 5000 pounds. that's including the trailer.

u-haul trailers are quite heavy, but they have a surge brake in the tongue, so backing up a slight hill may be a problem, but it should handle it.
i know my buddy used his xj to tow another xj all the time, but that was flat tow.

also, depends on your gears, stock 3.55 and an auto without a tranny cooler may be tough.

i think you'll be alright, but it all depends on u-haul. they may not allow it with their new strick restrictions. (just tell them you'll be towing a smart gutted smart car. lol.)

No It will be my XJ, My KJ is being sold lol! It is the auto tranny, but I have no Idea what gears are in it. I bought it with a few mods from a guy localy and he bought it the way it is now. So I dont know eveything that has been done.... So I dont know the gears. Can any one help me? I know when i was trying to figure out what gears were in my mustang Some one told be by the RPMs & Speed(mph) and Tire Height. Like if I was on my stock tires and wheels, going 60mph and my Rmps were at like 2500 I had 7.73s or something like that.... Tanks

you've probably got 3.55. stock gears.

but if it's lifted, with larger tires, it's gonna handle different towing a trailer. maybe even scary.
especially if you'll be in the mountains.

you should be able to pull the weight, it's the stopping/bends that worry me.

I know you envision crusiing the coast in your stang, but do you really want to put that many miles on it!

I would drive the XJ for comfort and everything.

I would never TOW a vehicle that far with the XJ. I doubt U-haul would even rent to you if you told them what you intended to do.

Oh and I love racing... So it would be nice to race differnt people than the Same people here in Columbus. And I always miss my mustang when I deploy, So now that i can have it... I wants it lol... i am doubt i will miss the jeep except for the ride there and the ride back....

Drive the Mustang and if you really want your XJ, ship it using a auto transport company. . It may cost you 6-800 to ship it,.... Or have a friend drive it there and fly back.

a friend and I towed a camaro with a gooseneck trailer and a ford 1 ton truck from chicagoland to Las Vegas.

It is all fun and games until you hit those mountains. I think the XJ would struggle to pull the car and trailer over those hills, and if it did the brakes would not be enough to stop you coming down the other side.

you should just make a road trip of it. Take a friend to drive one while u drive the other, switch out a few times, and fly him/ her back after a week or so. Best of both worlds. U get both cars AND help unloading your crap!
