Cam sensor mistake.
 
Long time reader, new member, and first post. Not new to XJ's but I did something yesterday and don't know how to proceed.

I'm putting a 98 4.0 in my 00 xj. I go to change the distributor to the oil pump drive/cam sensor. I had both engines in the #1 firing position. I knew what to do and had a punch ready but forgot to put it in the sensor. What can I say, I'm old school. I yank a distributor and get it right when I put it in. I knew what I did just as it cleared the block but too late.

How do I get this right? Can I turn it like a setting timing with a distributor or do I not need to try to start it until I get it right. I'm at a loss as what I need to do.

What are trying to say? Are you asking how to install the OPDA/CMP in your motor?

Yes, I failed to pin it before I took it out so I'm starting from scratch.

You'll have to find Top Dead Center Compression stroke on #1 cylinder.


Remove #1 spark plug.


Remove the electric radiator fan to get a direct view of the Crankshaft Damper and the timing marks on the timing chain cover.


Locate and outline the timing slot on the damper.


Have a helper hold their finger over the #1 spark plug hole while you turn the damper clockwise using the damper bolt.


When air pressure can be felt as you turn the damper, #1 is coming up on its compression stroke.


Watch the timing slot on the damper as it approaches the zero (O) mark on the timing chain cover. Bump the wrench until the damper slot aligns with the (O) mark on the timing chain cover. If you go past it, back the damper up about 90 degrees and slowly come at it again. See pic.

Now, go by these instructions:


Note that the instructions say to use a DRB tool to do the final check of the installation (dealer).


Here's a pic of the alignment marks I made on my engine distributor mount hole for the purpose of aligning the oil pump drive slot. Mark is at the 11:00 o'clock position.

Edit: Don't forget a new gasket for the OPDA. Felpro makes them and they are available at most auto parts stores.

Worked like a charm. Just barely turned over and started right up. I figured it was simple but did not know the procedure. I think I have a really good engine here so I'm pretty happy right now. Thanks again CCKen.
