Question A/C Off and On

Well for months our A/C had worked for 20min then quit. Turn the A/C off and on every 1 min 4-19 times and it will start working again. Last night I pulled into the garage and it was working so I stuck the guage on it. It ran from 24-30psi while blowing cold (not very cold, but good). It stayed on......go figure. So I turned it off (back up to 100psi - ambient temp) then turned the A/C back on....the compressor kicks on, but the A/C doesn't blow cold...then it did it!!! I heard something like a switch click and the pressure dropped to 30psi and the cold air started.

What is making it not work?

You're low on refridgerant. Find and fix the leak.

After reading through the FSM, I think you are right. Low on refridgerant and high on oil. I think I will have a trusted shop flush the entire system and check for leaks.

Yep, low refridgerant, have you added oil? If not I wouldn't think that would be a issue. I hope you can find a trust worthy shop for your A/C around here they all try and r*pe you.

Tell me more about the high pressure switch.

The reason I say it has high oik was from one of the diagnostic charts in the FSM and that in the past when I have thought I put too much refrigerant in and released pressue out the fill fitting, oil came out pretty quickly.

Trust me, it's low on refridgerant and the oil level and high pressure switch are more than likely fine.

That is what I would do, but don't dump a whole can at once, just add a small amount abd see if the compressor doesn't come on and stay on.

Yeh, I have over filled it before. Before the system would cycle on and off, on and off, rather quickly and at a consistant interval. I watched the guage as it would kick on and the pressure would drop. Once it got to about 18-19psi it would kick off. Then a few seconds later it could kick back on.

I ran the truck in the garage for a while the other night hoping to see the guage when it kicked off, but the darn thing never kicked off on me. For about 15min it hovered around 30psi.

This weekend I will add a little bit and see what happens. I am getting quotes from a local shop that I trust to do a flush of the system. I don't like going to shops and I usually do all my own work, but I feel like I am into something that requires specialized equipment and experience.

its tripping low pressure sensor. try adding that uv dye, check the lines and see if you can find the leak. also check the condensation pool for dye and pray its not there.

Dont flush it, check the pressure, either the hps or lps is enacting, that means you either have a leak(buy some refrigerant with leak sealer), that would be the lps problems, or hps would be if the compressor was running whenever you turn on the fan(ac, heat, vent, etc.)

Well, I am betting on a leak. When we inherited this XJ from my late Father-in-law he had every service receipt down to the oil changes. It was in 2 times in the last 3 years of his life to repair the "A/C leak."

try picking up a ArcticFreeze Smart Charge Gauge from Kmart or Sears hook it up and look at what it tells you is wrong or what to do.
