Default A/C control problems and vacuum line question.

Please bear in mind that I am a complete idiot when it comes to things mechanical.

Now...

I have a 2001 Cherokee and today I discovered that the A/C blows hot or cold, but it only blows out of the defroster, not vent or feet or combination.

I did some research here and it said that could be controlled by vacuum lines.

Is this correct?

SO, I looked under the hood and found this vacuum line unplugged:

...and I found that it had been eaten in half where it went under the battery....

...and it connects here:

So, my questions:

Is this causing my A/C problem?

Can I duct tape the line?

And...where the hell does the other end plug in? I can't seem to locate where it would plug in.

Thanks in advance!

Not sure about your year but on my 95 and 96 XJ's there is a vacum reservoir behind the front bumper. A long vacum line runs to it and I do believe that is the vacum reservoir that controls the heat/ac vent selector.

The reservoir is black plastic tank with the vacum line hose attached to it.

Like this or something similar .....

The fact that your line runs under the battery leads me to believe that your reservoir is down in front as well.

Default Ah, OK.

Thanks!

I crawled underneath the front end and located this:

I was able to jury rig a solution for the broken vacuum line using a shaft of a bic pen and duct tape:

re-installed that:

And -PRESTO-! the Climate Control works again!

This place is awesome!

I have read where some have take that tank from where it is and mounted it under the hood. Usually they experience what you did and put it under the hood to shorten the line.

I'me gonna try something a little different because the shape of that tank doesn't make it fit well under the hood.

I am thinking of making a custom reservoir, like we do for installing cruise control of motorcycles that are vacuum operated.

When I do, and it tests out OK I'll post a write up on this forum.

Should be within a week or two.

EDIT: When I first saw the tank Iwas wondering what it was for and why the heck did they mount it there. My son thought it was an tank for an air horn.

Default AC VACUUM HOSE

Looks like the RATS got to it !!! I have my old YJ and an old '85 Camry sitting out in back and those D_____ rats keep getting under the hood and finding things to chew on.
