You need to service your system with 134a......and if you have an older XJ that used to have R12, you have to purge it and fill it with R134a. I found this out the hard way a year ago when I was in Cali. The environmentalists came up with another way we are supposedly killing off the Ozone layer. (R12) refrigerant. Anyhoo, so the local crook mechanic wanted to charge me right at $200 to purge, service and dispose of the old R12. I figured they would come up with a more reasonable price for something that was supposedly mandated by law. So, I went to Walmart and got myself a handy dandy R134a servicing kit and did it myself for $35. I probably didn't to the purging part in the proper or best way but, I purged the R12 out od mine and serviced it up with the R134a following the directions in the little kit I bought and my A/C and Defrost has worked fine since.
