Im gonna have to disagree with that statement...the Cooler needs to be mounted directly against the a/c condensor if you have one...and in front of the stock clutch fan...If not you could over heat the trans.....My buddy lost the trans in his power stroke because he mounted the cooler on the grill with a 1" gap between the radiator. And at low cruise speeds air flow was limited (granted he was towing). causing it to fry the clutch packs......!!!! However i agree about the Thermal by-pass not being needed.....All factory coolers mounted on the radiator do not use one....I would skip it. Get the biggest cooler you can fit and run it.

My information comes from a transmission tech with 35 years experience, so you disagree with him, I was just passing on the info.
Which trans did your buddy have in the P-stroke? Was he trying to tow in OD?
Just trying to tow in OD at low speeds will reduce system pressure, cooling oil flow and reduce fan suction at any clearance ... all things which can contribute to trans failure and in this instance, if I understand you correctly, may all have been happening.
Diesels may have some bodacious grunt torque, but even a Cummins has to be down-shifted.

I have to agree with 88. I consulted with a Trans shop before installing my B and M. They said to keep as much room between the new unit and my AC condenser, because while running your AC the condenser heats up as well.

well then i guess all the millions of vehicles with the coolers mounted on the condensor/radiator just arnt any good...........If the cooler has low air flow the fluid is gonna get hot...doesnt matter what gear its in. Mounting the cooler off the radiator without haveing a mini fan is a BAD idea...argue it all you want.

OTOH, I mounted one on my radiator when I swapped an auto in place of a stick in a 64 Valiant, and it ran hot even with a stock fan (direct drive).
My RV, 78 Dodge m-400 chassis with 440/ 4Bbl, clutch fan, 727, 4.10 Dana 70 axle, has just a aftermarket cooler (radiator cooler leaks) mounted behind the grille and it's never become overheated even pulling a fully loaded 6X12 U-Haul over an 11,000 foot pass (Monarch Pass, CO). But then, I shifted to low range and kept my rpm up.

is it worth while running one of these?
was thinking of puting it on my KJ cherokee..

has its own thermo and trigger switch to regulate its own temps.
will run the oil thermostat too
the one above is the 10" model. is it worth while going the 13" model?

I guess every vehicle/situation is different and the fact that his trans had 220K on it probally didnt help. I was just stating what happend and what the cause was. In fact a bracket that hangs it about a 1/4" from the radiator would be best. I also think a mechanical guage is mandatory when doing a cooler. from what i have been told the Valve body has a thermal bypass switch inside it. so a external one isnt needed.

It would be excellent and could be mounted anywhere air can flow, but check here:

Come to cogitate on it, I haven't seen anything like that in any slushbox I've torn down in the last 25 years or so.
This is probably why they put the "cooler" in the radiator tank - it also heats up the fluid, since the engine coolant will get warm faster than the transmission fluid will. Still seems like a silly notion, tho, and there are better ways to solve the problem.
