Default Buying ?: 96 low miles vs. 00 high miles

New to forum, looking at Cherokees to buy.

Comparable price between the 2

96 with about 89k on it, been garaged, no rust

00 with about 188k on it, minor rust

overall under the hood looks similar, but I don't know too much to look for. The 96 just got a full tune up and look over from a mechanic, the 00 would need to get checked out. Assuming it does, which would you rather have?

I have A 96. I love it! That aside it still sounds like an easy one to answer, but I dont know alot about the 2000. Still the 96 has no rust, less mileage, unless its rolled over(I WOULDNT THINK THAT LIKELY) The 96 is A bit of an oddball year its a transitional year. 96 97 98 are kinda grouped together, but there are some parts like exhaust that seem to be only 96 specific. Parts fom pre95 and after 96 will fit the 96 just have minimal research to find out. JCF has been really good to me as far as finding good info, I dont do these online chat things ever until I came across JCF. If I were you I'd buy the 96 and see if you could buy the intake manfold off the 2000. The 96 has A fuel system that alot of guys put on their pre96s. Sorry about the book I did try to keep it short. Good Luck either way I think youll love your xj. P.S. If you dont want the 96 I'll take it.

Noise, vibration and harshness.

They are pretty much the same however. They only real NVH difference is the door seals.

I would definitely go for the 96 with low miles if it was well maintained and garaged..

I like the 96 better. High pinion front axle, no coil on plug, I like the dash better, the front end looks more rugged and less toy like, and the best of the old and new XJ refinements.

Thanks, don't think the guy is gonna let me tear off parts. Both are basically stock, the 00 has a few extras added on but nothing major. I'm leaning towards the 96 at this point.

if its like it sounds i personally would go for the 96; both for the lower miles and the mechanical side of it (hp dana30, no coil packs, the head problems on the 00-01 even though most likely at 180k+ its been done, etc) but thats just me

If you love rust go for the 00 ,rust has killed a lot of xjs. Motors and all the running gear can be rebuilt, unibodies? 96 all the way for me.
