Notwithstanding, if you read my post you'll see that the Jeep has been maintained by the main dealer from new. Before I bought it, I went to the dealer with the PO, checked all the service records and also spoke to the service manager. All confirmed that the vehicle had no incident or record of overheating.

OP - like I said, I did everything right and it still went wrong. Like others have said on this forum, there's plenty of stories out there of guys who meticulously serviced their Jeeps and still suffered a cracked head. I'm not saying it WILL happen. I'm saying that it MIGHT happen. If you buy, just be prepared for the possibility.

Ash
I still could have overheated w/o tour or the dealerships knowledge

i agree i bout a 2000 xj that has only 80k on it. i thought with that low miles the cooling system would be fine and it wouldnt overheat cracking the head. a month later it over heated on me and now i have to replace the head. i would stick with 99 or earlier or budget in the cost to replace the head in your budget.

Lesson 1 in buying used cars: don't assume these things lol. Totally preventable.

99 is the best year. No wiring issues, like the '97s have, still has a dizzy vs coil on plugs, HP30 front axle, and some of the other things that were mentioned. I bought a '00 that I paid $1400 for. It had right at 170k, and was great. Then I started noticing that the coolant was disappearing. It had gotten hot a couple of times, but not until a club trail ride, where I buried the needle on the temp gauge. I had already purchased a radiator, and had installed it(after 12 years, the factory one might still be good, but I went ahead and replaced), still overheating, not as bad. So I went ahead and replaced the water pump. Took an 800 mile drive to Louisville< KY for work. used 1 gallon on the trip. Had a compression check, nothing found. Pulled the oil fill cap, and wow found the problem. Whole cap and rest of top of valvetrain was coated in oil/coolant. Ordered and swapped a replacement cylinder head from Clearwater Cylinder heads. Hasn't used a drop of coolant since.
