Default Buying a 1986 Jeep Cherokee???

I need some input and opinions!

I was going to go look at an '86 Jeep Cherokee, the guy says its 2.8L with about 75k on it. It looks like it is in great shape but in the post the guys is saying that it might not pass emissions. It is really nice, I have an '88 cherokee w/ 4.0 and honestly I have not been that impressed with it, I've had it for 4 months. I have had to replace almost the entire cooling system, I seem to have issue after issue with it...

Anything I should ask, or look at for when I go take a look, any known issues with this year? Not familiar with this engine at all, or the carb for that matter??

Thanks all!

If the issues of the 4.0 bother you then you need to stay FAR FAR FAR away from the 2.8L engine.

Unless this thing is dirt cheap then I'd pass.

Is it the engine, or the fact that it is carb'd? My 4.0 ain't bad its got 76k, this one is just in better shape. Nice paint, good interior, $2500 is what he is asking, I wish I could put the pics up...

I'd also pass without a second thought. That price is just ridiculous don't let him take advantage of you

Yep, WAY too high. You could find a late model in good shape for that price.

The 2.8 was a GM V6 that was prone to leaking oil, among other problems. I agree, that engine is better suited as a boat anchor.
I would try and talk the guy down in price first, before condeming it altogether. If you can get it cheap, swap the 4.0 from your '88 (along with all the computer crap) into the '86. The '84-89?(last of the Renix systems) were all basicly the same, so the swap should be easy.

I almost bought an '86 2.8 V6 2dr a couple yrs ago. It had a horrible transmission leak. I still wish I had got it, I like the 2dr versions better than the 4drs (like my '87).

Good luck!
