burn smell when i turn the heat on

the other day, after running the heat/cold for several hours while wheeling, switching back and forth between the 2, my 2000 xj puffed white smoke out of my vents for 2 or 3 seconds, and that was it. I ran it for 2 more days, no smell at all. heat/ac worked fine. now it smells like a burnt belt almost when i turn the heat on. I am not getting any dripping on the passenger side, like a heater core leak would do.
any ideas to point me in the right direction?

yeah its blowing at normal speed...i just let it idle for 15 min with the heat blowing hard and paper under the dash on the passengers side to detect moisture. No dripping at all and the air smells like burnt plastic a little, it is not as strong a smell as it was earlier. i think it might have been a short too...
