Default brake sticking 96 xj

On the way home yesterday my Jeep's front drivers side brake locked up. I took the wheel off and hit the brake caliper until it let go enough for the wheel to turn. It did it a second tine before I made it home. I plan on looking at it next weekend but need advice on where to start. Also any writeups on cleaning brakes, and how I can't tell what needs to be replaced would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would get new calipers and pads. I wouldn't trust burnt pads. Your in luck because they are cheap. I had this happen and I replaced the calipers then it happened a few months later. I found out the carriers on the front were corroded and pitted. I hit them with some sandpaper ( where the metal tabs on the pads connect and slide along the carrier) and applied some heat resistant grease. sand them nice and smooth and you should be fine. Good luck...

YouTube is a jeepers best friend. Major piece of advice. Nipples up!! Remember that when replacing calipers or your brakes will not bleed. Good luck. Feel free to message me if you get stuck.

xjtimbo hit the nail right on the head!!! I replaced the calipers on my '91, I marked the boxes L & R at the parts store per the counter guy (I turned in my old ones for the core when I picked up the new ones), turned out he gave me backwards info, I ended up replacing the master cylinder before I tried swapping them (which worked!!).

We hate to learn the hard way but in the end you still learn. You now know how to change a master cylinder.

By the way it is very easy but remember to check your contact points for you brake pads sand them smooth and grease them. I used dielectric grease you can use almost anything that is good around heat and wont wash off in water and mud.

I bought some hi temp caliper grease and used that. I wish I had coated that master cylinder with something, it's in it's ugly rusting stage right now.

So I got the new caliper on and its leaking from where the brake line connects. Also the brake line is stripped where it connects to the line from above. Any ideas on why it would be leaking.

If its leaking from where the line connects to the caliper it may be the copper washer. The copper washer should go between the caliper and the line. not the banjo fitting and the bolt. Im pretty sure but I may have it backwards.
