Brake Drum help....
Been trying to get my rear brake drum off all morning...
According to the manual to back off the brake shoes requirers using a screwdriver in the adjustment "window" and turning the wheel by moving the hande upwards...Am I reading this right?...
I've turned it this way as far as I can and still can't get the drum off..
My search here suggests hitting the drum with a large hammer...Which is what I've been doing..(I hope correctly)...
Any suggestions?....Or do I just keep wailing away at it?....Thanks..

Yes you need to back off the shoes to get the drum off in most cases, you usually need two tools to get it to do so though, one to push on a plate that locks the starwheel in place, then one to actually move the starwheel, you will know if youre going the right direction if you spin the drum, if you cant move it like the e-brake is on, youre going the wrong way, if it spins nice and easy, you know youre on the spot.
More often than not they are stubborn pigs to get off, spray some pb blast around the lugs, and in the center of the drum (any area where you see it contacts the hub) and try to also scrape some of the rust out of them areas, keep spraying and scraping, and pounding once the shoes are not contacting the drum, you should get it, keep your lugs protected though, you dont want to damage them getting the drum off, the lugs put on part way works good to protect the threads.
Heres a link that might help you through the process once you get the drums off!

The drum is still hanging up somewhere...I think I may have adjusted the shoes the wrong way...

I have a brake adjustment tool but I can't figure out how to make the catch bar release so I can turn the adjustor the other way...
I doesn't help that I can't see anything....I've been under there with a mirror and flashlight.... but can't seem the locate the bar to push it out of the way...Anymore advice?...
PS..thank you for the link too...I hope eventually that I am able to use it...

lol np, just push a tool around in there, it goes straight in you should feel the tab press outward (toward the hub) it's the only spring loaded feel you'll get by doing this, you'll feel it go out and back in when pressure is released... Also if you have a new drum and pads/hardware you can bang the drum off forcefully from the rear (backing plate side, I say only with new parts because damage can occur with this method, you should have new hardware if changing pads and drum anyways) you may have a heck of a rust ridge holding it up on the pads toward the back plate side.

I managed to find the sucker....I did adjust the shoes the wrong way...
Not a pretty sight when I got it off though..leaking cylinder...drum pretty scored and rusty...and the pads seem to be disinagrating....
Off to get some new drums..pads..hardware..etc...
Good thing it's not my DD.....I figure this is gonna take me awhile..
Even having a few service manuals....I wouldn't have figured this out without your help...A big thanks again...
