Back in May I have the OEM drivers side brake caliper freeze up on me. Annoying but no big deal, it was 18 years old. So I replaced that and since the passenger side was the same age I replaced that as well. Bled the brakes and off we go. Today I was driving and some moron pulled out in front of me. I slammed on brakes and a few minutes later I feel the tell tale signs of a frozen caliper. I pull over and sure enough the passenger side is frozen to the rotor. After she cooled down I released the bleeder and the caliper unfroze. I have driven her 20 miles since and no issue. My concern is even with locking the brakes the caliper shouldn't of froze. I am thinking debris in the lines which mind you are 18 years old...possibly old fluid...and of course my mind has drifted to the age of the master cylinder and possible corrosion.
Anyone have any ideas of similar experience? How hard is it to replace the rubber hoses if that needs to be done?

 

Hoses are easy to replace.

Have you checked the condition of the sliding surfaces of the knuckles? Look for grooves that can lock up the pads.

 

I have not checked that but I will. If there are groves what is the fix for that? I am in a work situation that I will not be able to work on the XJ til Sunday so I have a few days to plan and pick up parts. I work 2 jobs full time and don't have the time for a break down so I plan to hit a few things on Sunday...so far change out all the fluid, replace the rubber hoses and check/fix these slots...hopefully one of these will fix the issue.

 

Are the crimped ends of the hoses rusted?
If so.. That's your problem.
Rusted ends expand and restrict the rubber hose. I highly doubt the master or new calipers are the problem.

 

I had a dragging caliper on the right front of my '92 about a month ago. Hot burning brake smell.

I went ahead and replaced both calipers, both hoses, the pads, and the rotors.

Bled the brakes. Now all is good.
