Default Brake Booster Adjustment

My power brake booster is bad at the brake pedal end. I've gotten a new booster but I notice that the master cyllinder push rod does not adjust like the original.

The original booster the rod is very firmly in place and I can adjust the threaded portion in and out with my fingers. however on the new one (and I've looked at three new ones before installing them and the master cylinder push rod on all of them have some 'play' and when I try to adjust the threaded portion, the entire rod spins so you can't thread it in and out.

When I mount the master cylinder, the master cylinder push rod is too far out and when I bolt down the MC it will be compressed and the brakes will drag.

Are all these new boosters I'm looking at correct and my original booster is the oddball? Or should I put a vise grip on the push rod sheath and crank the threaded portion with a wrench? (see pic)

Anyone have any advice?
